When I started BirthLink in July 1996, I was inspired by my knowledge of the birth community locally, nationally and internationally. It is still essentially an underground community held together by the belief that childbirth is a natural physiological function of the human body. There is also the belief that a vast majority of the time our bodies and babies know just what to do. These seem to be the core beliefs that affect decisions as to where, with who and how someone might give birth. Once you have decided where to have your baby the rest more or less falls into place. Or does it? The notion that we have control over the birth process is just plain inaccurate. The question becomes where can you give birth with the least amount of risk? Since you have no way of knowing what will happen, much like life, it seems that it is a process that is based on faith and trust. Where we put our trust seems to have a great deal to do with how the birth process is experienced.
BirthLink is founded on the belief that we are all responsible for our own heath and well being. We exist to help educate families about their options for care. Not only during pregnancy and birth but after as well. We even help families find healthcare that is wellness based. It may be that our very survival depends on making conscious choices! We may be giving birth to ourselves as each life changing event comes our way. How we choose to make these passages is based on our sense of self worth. I have learned that the more I love and accept myself for the glorious and unique human that I am the less I am willing to put myself in harms way. How much do we trust the birth process?
I have learned a great deal by being a birth advocate. The private consultations I give have been wonderful experiences. It’s great to work with couples who are interested in learning as much as possible. Sometimes they start to bond as parents fully realizing that they indeed are bringing another human being into our world. Confident birth makes confident parents. In my new mom’s groups I see so much anxiety. In my shiatsu practice I work with women anxious to get pregnant. When I was doing these things I thought it was all so much fun. I enjoy supporting families and helping them make happier healthier choices. Happier people — happier planet! I appreciate all the referrals for birth options consults and to the BirthLink network.
Thanks for joining me on my human journey. BirthLink is a voice for change.
