Midwives – Home Birth

The interest in home birth is increasing and is mirroring the interest in alternative health care. With a skilled practitioner, and a low-risk pregnancy, birth can take place in the home safely. Most risk factors can be screened out before the birth. Ninety percent of all births should be normal and require no interventions. Both parents need to be totally committed and comfortable with this option. After fully researching their options many parents are choosing to birth at home, the place where this experience traditionally took place for thousands of years. Please note that all home birth providers can provide water birth.

You should be aware of the different types of providers that offer home birth in your state. In Illinois there are, certified nurse midwives (CNM), and non-nurse called certified professional midwives (CPM). I don't refer to anyone who is practicing without these qualifications. It is critical that you fully research their qualifications, training and background in depth. There is a great deal to learn. It is recommended that you begin the process with a private consult with Jo Anne Lindberg, president and founder of BirthLink and home birth parent. A list of personal referrals is included.

See alphabetical listings for Chicago midwives below. Please contact the practitioner directly to schedule an appointment or if you have any questions. Be sure to let them know BirthLink sent you!

If you can't find a practitioner near you please contact us.

"...We’re asking the body to do an amazing thing. The body works better if a woman feels safe and is with people she knows... If a woman feels empowered (by her birth) she has so much more energy to deal with her baby...."
