Part Two of a Six Part Series
Read, no devour as much information as you can about NATURAL birth, UNDISTURBED birth, how your body and baby work together all on their own. This excludes the book the hospital will give you ( big surprise ). You need to gain a deep understanding of how the process works naturally. This is a very different process from the managed and controlled birthing experience offered to women within the hospital.
The more you know about how your body and baby work together, the more confident you will feel about speaking your wishes. Also, with education comes a greater understanding which will keep your fear levels at a minimum. Fear is used against us all the time in the birthing world. We are fearful of pretty much everything and many providers play into those fears by making us think our bodies aren’t capable.
Once you believe in your body and it’s awesomeness, the fear will no longer control you. It may still be present, but it will no longer consume all of your thoughts surrounding your birth. Sign up for a childbirth education class that is run by an independent group. Look for a class that focuses on teaching you coping techniques and how to work WITH your body during labor. These classes give an excellent break down of what the body is doing during labor and how your hormonal system is working to birth your baby. There are always exceptions to everything, but in my experience the majority of classes that are run out of hospitals focus on teaching you how to be ” a good patient ” coupled with a full explanation of all the drug choices you will have. For a woman who wants to birth naturally, an independent childbirth education class is the way to go!
