The inspiration for this post is based on a common question I am often asked. It has been asked so much that I felt the need to create a post about the topic! Is it possible to have a natural, empowering hospital birth? And, if so, how can I achieve this in the machine of the modern day maternity care system?
One of the things I did to compile my answers / information was talk with a handful of women who have had natural, empowering births within the hospital. While homebirth is on the rise in our country ( I am obviously a huge homebirth advocate as my second was born in the comfort and peace of our home ) I realize not every woman and family is comfortable with having their baby at home. It seems that there is an unspoken rule that if you birth within the hospital you will end up being managed and at the mercy of your provider. While that has certainly been the case with many women birthing in the USA hospitals, there are also numerous women who have achieved the type of birth experience they wanted within the hospital walls. In my opinion, here are the four most important choices you have and should look into doing if you want to achieve a natural birth in a hospital setting.
Here are the topics that will be covered in the next few posts. This is a six part series.
- Educate – Educate – Educate
- Interview Your Provider
- Stay at Home as Long as Possible
- Get Support- Hire a Doula
- Delay all hospital procedures for two hours.
