I’m reading Anne Morrow Lindberg. Of course I had read Gifts from the Sea but it seems she has written other works that I was not aware of. It’s so fun for me to discover and get to know an author. She flew with her husband many times in that tiny two seater plane. I’m so amazed at what she did as an early flyer. I never knew anything about that. How could that be? I’ve always had a connection with the Lindbergh’s but they are not related to me. People often asked me if I was. The Aviator’s Wife was excellent.
I started my love affair with books when I was a child. I was taken to the public library when I was quite young. I loved it. I was always in the summer ready program. I got to pick what I wanted to read and often stayed up late reading with a flashlight so my parents wouldn’t know. I read to my son from the early years. I was a reading teacher. In spite of my efforts he never learned to love to read. I still feel sad about that.
When my young nephew told me he doesn’t like to read. It felt like a repeat of struggles to get me son to read. I fear books may go away some day. Electronic books are just not the same. I have more of my own books than any other possession and I still go to the library. I have twenty-four build in book shelves. I worry that children are missing out on the joy of reading. They would rather be entertained. How does this impact their creativity and imagination? I believe these are qualities that help with later problem solving that could create a better life for all living beings. Children are often plugged in to some kind of electronic device for hours each day. I hope that you will read to your children to share a love of books. It can also create a special connection with them for the love of reading.
