In a world that seems to have gone crazy on so many levels how do we stay connected with so much change going on? I believe that as old systems break down new and better ones will replace them. What old systems am I referring to? The old power over systems that include, government, education, medicine and food production. Many families are choosing to create new systems already. One way I try to have a positive impact on the planet is food choices. I support local organic farmers as much as possible. I vote with my dollars by only buying products that will last. I don’t buy things that I don’t need. I donate things I’m not using. There are many things we can do as individuals. I believe recycling everything that can be used again will be required in the future. We can’t keep devouring the planet.
I have several friends who believe that there is nothing we can do. They have decided to believe that human life is doomed to die out and go the way of the dinosaurs. That seems so bleak to me. I wonder how this affects their health and well-being? It makes me feel sad to think that this belief is a choice. We have the choice to believe in the innate goodness of humans – or not. I choose to believe, while we are facing the most serious problems we have ever faced, people will choose to cooperate and solve these problems together and thereby ensure the survival of the human race.
We live on a very small planet and it is getting smaller all the time. I have been participated in a practice of cultural exchange. I have had roommates from, France, Argentina, Canada and China. I have friends all over the world. I’ve lived in and traveled in other countries. I’ve learned that we all have the same needs and many similar wants. We want to be loved and acknowledged. We want to know that our life matters. How do we meet this need? Perhaps by making a positive contribution to others in a direct and observable way. At some point we have to accept who we are and know we are doing the best we can. If we are experiencing true happiness then we are making a contribution to those around us.
