I was with my best friend at the birth of her first child in February of 1999. Though it was initially very exciting and it ended well, it turned out to be a labor and birth filled with interventions. My friend had hoped for a drug free birth, but had not prepared for it. Soon after arriving at the hospital, she decided to get an epidural. This slowed things down so the midwife started her on pitocin. She was then required to have an internal fetal monitor. After this, all eyes were on the machinery in the room and people watched the rise and fall of the line on the graph paper marking each contraction. Nobody was looking at my friend or talking to the baby. When her son was born, he was whisked away and my friend didn’t even see him for some time. Though everyone ended up fine, the whole process was an ordeal. It was a completely medical event with little connection to the baby working hard to be born. It left me feeling like there had to be a better way.
I was sharing this experience with a colleague, and she told me about HypnoBirthing®. I was already a heart-centered hypnotherapist at the time, so I knew how powerful hypnosis could be. I took the training class for HypnoBirthing® as soon as I could and, from then on, I have known and seen birth to be a very gentle, natural and fulfilling experience for both the parents and the newborn.
Doing any kind of work where babies are concerned is joy-filled. It is lovely to work with prospective parents and their unborn babies. However, the main reason I decided to offer HypnoBirthing® relates to my work with spiritual psychotherapy. In the course of working with my clients, I found that at some point in our work together, the majority of them would refer back to the event of their birth and uncover areas needing healing. They found that their birth experience was the source of some problems which they had been dealing with all their life. It seemed logical to me that if the Mom and her birth partner prepared for a gentle birthing experience, the baby would have a much better start to their life!
