Do the long lists of side effects on medications worry you? When a child or infant suffers from colic, stuffy sinus, upset stomach, disturbed sleep, or ear infections, there is an alternative to medication! Shonishin, which literally means “child needle”, is part of a Japanese tradition using highly developed palpatory skill and specialized non-invasive techniques to influence energy (Qi) and promote self-healing. Shonishin is performed with tools that do not break the skin. These may be pressed, rubbed, tapped or scraped on the skin to give different kinds of gentle stimulation. As the treatment is not invasive, it is completely safe and there are NO side effects.
An Oriental medicine diagnosis begins with talking about the problem. However, palpation of the abdomen and the skin is very important to decide where and how to treat. The fingertips of the practitioner seek variations in the texture, temperature, and resiliency of the skin. The foundation of treatment is light rapid stroking of the whole body. The amount of pressure and length of the strokes varies with the child’s age and condition. Next, there is focused attention to several points or areas. Changes in the skin and the appearance of the child give immediate feedback to the practitioner. Treatments are brief, ranging from less than 5 minutes for infants, up to 10 minutes for older children.
The treatment goals are to improve digestion, strengthen the constitution, and introduce a harmonizing influence. This harmonizing influence may occur through shifting the nervous system from sympathetic to parasympathetic dominance, which enhances the child’s self-healing ability and immune function.
Conditions treated include:
Colic, Diarrhea, Constipation
Common cold, Asthma, Allergies
Sleep Disturbance, Bedwetting
Treatment is more effective at the onset of a condition. Recommended frequency of the treatment is 1-2 times weekly. Some conditions may resolve in 1-2 weeks. Chronic complaints require more time. In most cases, treatment gives a greater sense of well being. This helps to resolve other small day-to-day problems and improve immune function. Parents may be taught techniques to use at home to support the ongoing effect of treatment.
Children are very responsive to this treatment. Shonishin gives a gentle corrective nudge to open blockages and supplement weaknesses in the circulation of Qi, revealing the state of health that is the child’s birthright.
