Medical Interventions – Risk vs Benefits

February 2, 2021 By Jo Anne Lindberg

I have been working with parents and the birth community for many years. I am also an Asian medicine practitioner. My perspective on how to make informed decisions with regard to childbirth, and health challenges, is based on gathering information and evaluating possible risks vs benefits. My view is a very conservative one. First make sure that adequate self care is in place. Reflect on diet, exercise, rest and rejuvenation. Ask yourself, how you can support the natural healing process of the body, mind, spirit? Systems that support the laws of nature usually have fewer side effects. In the case of childbirth, it is best to allow nature to take it’s course without interference unless a rare proven need arrises. Always evaluate your options in the complementary and western systems.

Western medicine is only one system of dealing with health challenges. There are others that are also effective. In some cases, less expensive and more effective. Figuring out what is most appropriate can be a challenge. I suggest the least intervention oriented methods first. Educate your self about complementary medicine. Make informed choices, especially with regard to childbirth.

Here are some of the influencing factors to consider when choosing a practitioner.

Personal integrity and beliefs

Type and quality of training

Positive and negative work experiences

Culture they work in

Employee vs private practice

Insurance dictates and billing

Fear of law suites

Influence of pharmaceutical companies

Need to make a profit or have billable procedures

Over dependence on technology and drugs

Liability laws

Lack of knowledge and respect for other medical systems

Time pressure causing lack of continuing education

Consider paying out of pocket so you don’t get stuck in the insurance trap. I have major medical insurance and pay out of pocket for everything else. That way I get to choose what is the best modality to utilize. I also spend what I would be paying for insurance premiums on wellness care such as acupuncture and herbs. True preventative medicine is self care and complementary modalities such as chiropractic, nutrition coaching, personal trainers, yoga, massage and bodywork, activities you enjoy, physical therapy, cranial sacral, Asian medicine, meditation and much more. Invest in your health. This is your most precious gift.
