Midwifery Today

May 28, 2026 By Jo Anne Lindberg

I hope everyone knows about this organization. It has been a labor or love for many years. When Jan Tritten retired and sold it there were many challenges. Today it is still evolving. The magazine has a long history of amazing information for both parents and practitioners.

“Imagine if our culture told us that birth was one of the greatest things a woman might ever do. Imagine if the stories and images we were exposed to taught us that labor is an incredible and transformational experience. A rite of passage into
motherhood.” Leonie MacDonald

The above quote is from a recent newsletter. I could not have said it better myself. After having two home births I was empowered, in many ways, for the rest of my life! I was inspired to start BirthLink to help other women learn about the power of birth.

It seems that midwifery and home birth have been happening for centuries. While there have been many struggles to wipe it out it still remains. Families that choose home birth, and have a successful birth at home, get to experience the highlight of life.

That being said. it does take some time and effort to figure out how to find and vet a midwife that will match your needs. This happens through interviews and getting references. Does it work every time? No, but it does the majority of the time unlike the disruptions of a hospital birth.

I still want to encourage parents to carefully consider their birth options. Most don’t and suffer the consequences. Most don’t even know what those consequences are. I pray that babies are honored and recognized for their many gifts to us. that they have a chance to guide and direct their birth along with their mother for the best possible birth.
