I knew my body so well that I could tell when I was going to ovulate. I got pregnant when I wanted to and avoided pregnancy as well successfully for 30 years. I tried other methods but my body knew better. Charting and tracking my cycles was a great science project for me. After a while I didn’t bother with record keeping. I just listened to my body. I used a barrier method on my unsafe days. I started to chart again when I was going through menopause. I found it very interesting and empowering to know my body so well.
I have concerns about women using hormonal birth control. I’ve often wondered what the difference is between HRT and the Pill? I had a client who took the pill and lost her period. She had to wait an entire year for it to come back. Enodmetriosis, fertility problems and cancer have possible links to hormonal birth control. Aren’t we messing with Mother Nature? After doing thorough research, I suggest that you weigh the risks versus benefits and decide what might be best for you. There are only three days out of the month that present a problem — or an opportunity, depending on your goals. The fertility awareness method (FAM) also includes participation of the male partner in a way that can enhance your relationship.
Here are some great fertility awareness method or FAM resources:
- Most midwives and many doulas can help you learn about how FAM works. Some midwives offer the cervical cap or diaphragm for use on unsafe days.
- Chicago Women’s Health Center: Fertility Awareness Classes & Health Services on a sliding fee scale.
- Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler, MPH
- Google “Fertility Awareness Method”: tons of info as usual!
- Ferning is interesting; one product is ovuscope
- CycleBeads.com: a simple way to track your cycles
- Feminist Women’s Health Center: lots of factsheets
- There are also apps available for your smart phone.
